Osteria della Grondaia
Our story

A story that drips slowly.

Three generations, a Monti alley and one rule: home cooking is never improvised.

How it began

It started as a wine shop.

People came to the alley to fill their flasks with wine from the Castelli hills. To keep them around, grandfather Settimio began serving two dishes: the pasta of the day and boiled beef.

On rainy nights the gutter over the door made such a racket that the neighbours would say “let's go to the gutter”. The name stuck; there has never been a sign.

Today Velia, the granddaughter, runs the kitchen and rolls the pasta every morning on her grandmother's wooden table. Her brother looks after the room and talks about wine as if it were family history, because in a way it is.

The fifth quarter

Nothing is wasted, everything is cooked slowly.

Roman cooking was born from the cuts nobody wanted: oxtail, tripe, cheek. We treat them as prime cuts, with hours of cooking and never without celery. Alongside, dishes from the garden: artichokes, chicory, puntarelle, broad beans and pecorino in spring.

The glass

Lazio wine, and that's it.

Eighteen labels from the Castelli Romani, Ciociaria and Tuscia: Frascati, Cesanese, Grechetto. The house carafe is a white from the Castelli, as crisp as it used to be.
